God Story: “Accidental Electrocution Tests Farming Family’s Faith” — Kansas Farmer Survives 12,000 Volts

Here’s how God showed up in Hutchinson, Kansas 67501.

The soybean harvest was going as planned for Zach Short and his crew — until a radio call shattered the calm.
A combine had started smoking.

When Zach climbed up to investigate, no one realized it had come in contact with a low-hanging power line.

💥 12,000 volts of electricity shot through his body.

His hand locked to the ladder. Crew members used a plastic shovel to pry him free before calling 911.

EMT Shane Pearson said,

“His work boots had been blown open. He was in very critical condition.”

Zach was rushed to the hospital while his wife Jodi stayed home with their one-year-old daughter, Brynlee.

“I got a call saying Zach had been in an accident,” Jodi recalled. “My first question was, ‘Is he alive?’”

🚁 Life and Death in the Balance

At the hospital, the smell of burnt flesh filled the air.

Zach’s father, Chris, said,

“It was bad. You could tell how severe it was.”

He was airlifted to Via Christi Hospital in Wichita and placed in a medically induced coma.

Dr. Robert Bingaman explained,

“He had some of the deepest electrical injuries I’d ever seen. The burns were so severe that the chances of survival were about 50/50.”

Farmers across the county began stopping their tractors every day at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to pray for Zach.

Three days later, his heart stopped.

“They pulled me into the room,” Jodi said. “They were doing chest compressions.”

His mother, Lisa, remembers pleading,

“Come back to us, Zach. Come back.”

After several minutes, a nurse shouted: “We’ve got a pulse.”

But then his kidneys failed, and his lungs filled with fluid.

Doctors told the family to say goodbye. Jodi brought in little Brynlee to kiss her daddy one last time.

“I told her he was going to heaven,” she whispered.

🙏 When Prayer Becomes the Lifeline

Family and friends filled the waiting room, praying for a miracle.

Then — signs of life. Dr. Bingaman said,

“His blood pressure and oxygen started to rise. He stabilized. I told the family, ‘He’s making a liar out of me.’”

Lisa said, “God was in the room. He was answering people’s prayers.”

Within days, Zach’s kidneys began functioning again. His lungs cleared.

“The doctor said, ‘I’ve never seen anything like this before,’” Jodi recalled. Infections forced doctors to amputate both of Zach’s lower legs to save his life.

When he finally woke from the coma, his wife leaned over him.

“‘Do you remember me?’ I asked,” Jodi said.
“He smiled and said, ‘I’m not going to forget you or Brynlee.’”

Zach said, “I remembered exactly what happened in that field. It all came back.”

The next three months were grueling — therapy, surgeries, and tears.

“I got angry sometimes,” Zach said. “But I kept praying. I had too much to live for. God showed me the light.”

❤️ Faith Restored — and a Community Revived

On Valentine’s Day, Zach finally came home.

“I broke down,” he said. “People lined the streets with signs saying, ‘We love you, Zach.’”

His mother Lisa smiled,

“He asked how he could thank everyone. I said, ‘They want to thank you — because you brought them back to their faith.’”

Today, Zach wears prosthetics and is back on the farm with his family. He and Jodi are expecting their second child — a boy.

“If it wasn’t for prayer,” Jodi said, “we wouldn’t have received the miracle we got.”

Zach added,

“Doctors can’t explain it. The only explanation is God.”
